Last month, we sat down with Gosia Mulholland, Head of Finance at ElectroRoute.  We had the pleasure of working with ElectroRoute on their inaugural ESG Report over the last few months, which will be released this year. What became clear immediately is that ESG isn’t a branding exercise for ElectroRoute - it’s deeply connected to who they are and what they do.

Founded in Dublin and now operating across more than 40 energy markets in Europe and Asia, ElectroRoute describes its mission simply: to make net zero a reality. Their business model is built around helping renewable energy flow efficiently into electricity grids, solving the complex challenges that come with transitioning to cleaner energy systems. As Gosia puts it, the company is driven by “passionate and innovative individuals” who want to make that transition happen faster and more effectively.

A Thoughtful Approach to ESG Reporting

ElectroRoute didn’t approach ESG reporting as a tick-box exercise. Long before work on their inaugural ESG Report began, the team had spent over a year preparing for CSRD, exploring the GHG Protocol and developing internal capability around carbon accounting.

As Gosia explains: “We were looking at the GHG Protocol as part of our wider business activities, and CSRD became a core part of that in 2024.”

As the organisation deepened its work, the complexity increased - and Gosia is forthright about the point at which external expertise became essential: “The project became so complex and overwhelming, we needed VisionGreen to step in and support us. You made it manageable, and much more enjoyable.”

Even when the EU rolled back parts of the CSRD requirements, ElectroRoute didn’t step back. The regulatory pressure may have eased, but their commitment to transparency and responsible reporting did not. If anything, it reinforced their intention to produce high-quality, credible ESG disclosures - because they believe the clarity is valuable, regardless of obligation. ElectroRoute will publish their first ESG Report this year. It represents years of preparation, a significant investment in internal learning, and a deliberate decision to stay aligned with international best practice.

People First: ESG as a Collective Effort

A standout theme from the conversation is how strongly ElectroRoute views ESG as a people-centred process. The company ran an internal sustainability survey as part of the work - a step Gosia highlights as particularly valuable: “It was refreshing to see employees’ insights, we had a response rate of nearly 85%, which we feel highlights the passion our people have for sustainability.” These insights not only strengthened the ESG report, they also helped management understand what matters most to employees. That internal feedback loop is now part of how ElectroRoute plans to shape future sustainability initiatives.

The company has also built meaningful in-house knowledge on the GHG Protocol and emissions accounting, supported by structured collaboration across teams.

Looking Ahead

ElectroRoute plans to keep evolving their ESG reporting and internal capability. While the team now has a solid understanding of the GHG Protocol, growing operations - including new contracts, new commodities, or new geographies - will bring technical complexity. Gosia is direct about this: “When there are new contracts or new commodities, we may need assistance again. It’s highly technical.”

Their intention is clear: build strong internal knowledge and bring in specialist expertise when required to maintain accuracy, transparency, and international alignment.

Gosia’s Three Pieces of Advice for Businesses Beginning Their ESG Journey

These insights came without hesitation - and they reflect the practical realities of managing a fast-growing, data-heavy ESG process.

  • Keep it simple.

“ESG can seem so overwhelming… focus on what’s important. Don’t think about millions of data points. Think simple.”

  • Involve your employees.

“Leverage ESG as an opportunity to engage your employees and get their insights and preferences, we have seen huge benefits from this.”

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

“I would definitely encourage companies to hire experts like VisionGreen, they made the reporting process seamless and genuinely enjoyable.”
